We’ve Always Done It That Way”: A Phrase to Avoid

I believe one of the key factors in keeping a business viable, as we did with Capture Technologies, Inc. for over fifty years, is to always keep eyes and ears open for new or different ways to improve operating efficiencies.

An alarm in your head should go off if you ever hear, or ever utter, the words, “we have always done it that way!” Times change. Methods, ideas, and technologies are continually evolving to increase efficiency, allowing you to operate your business more effectively.

A good example of this is a story about what happened every Easter. A husband who watched his wife cut two or three inches off the small end of a leg of ham before cooking asked her why. Her initial reaction was, “my mother always did it that way, and I was following that tradition.” This prompted his wife to ask her mom about it. Her mom’s answer was, “I did that because the pan was too small!”

When managing your business, keep your eyes and ears open to opportunities for increasing efficiency. This not only saves money but also positions you to lead your company by example. Encourage your employees to look for new ways to better perform their jobs and to share their ideas with you.
